In most European countries, health insurance companies subsidise patients’ visits to a domestic health resort. Moreover, in some countries such as Slovakia, Switzerland and Germany, financial assistance is also granted for treatment in other European countries. Of course, the terms and conditions of each potential visitor’s health insurance company apply. Some companies like the German health insurance Techniker Krankenkasse support the EuropeSpa med certificate.
Health resort treatment should last at least two weeks. However, spa doctors recommend a minimum stay of three weeks for adults. If you’re thinking about attending a health resort, in Germany the first person to contact is your GP, who will write an application to your health insurer. Whether your trip will be funded depends on whether there is a legitimate reason for doing so, e.g. to avoid major health problems.
